Embracing the Journey: A Remarkable First Day as a University Lecturer

Stepping into the role of a lecturer is an exhilarating experience, and last evening marked an extraordinary milestone in my career. As I begin my journey as a lecturer for INDG 1011 Introduction to Indigenous and Settler Relations at Carleton University, I am filled with gratitude, excitement, and a deep sense of responsibility. This course holds immense significance as it delves into the complex dynamics between Indigenous peoples and settlers, shedding light on our shared history, responsibilities, inequities, and paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.

From the moment I decided to apply as a contract instructor at Carleton University, I was enveloped in a warm and inclusive atmosphere. The faculty, staff, and students demonstrated a genuine commitment to creating an environment that fosters understanding, respect, and open dialogue. It is truly heartening to be part of a community that embraces diversity and values the richness of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, while also challenging the settler colonial status quo in Canada.

The passion and enthusiasm displayed by the students in the online class last night was awe-inspiring. Witnessing their eagerness to learn, engage in meaningful discussions, and challenge their preconceived notions filled me with immense joy. The opportunity to facilitate these conversations and encourage critical thinking is an honor I do not take lightly.

As we embark on this collective journey, we will explore the historical context, contemporary issues, and the power dynamics that shape Indigenous and settler relations in Canada. Through this course, we will strive to foster empathy, understanding, and a deep appreciation for Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and sovereignty. By acknowledging the injustices of the past and working towards reconciliation and Indigenous resurgence, we can collectively build a more inclusive and equitable future.

Today marks the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in my academic career as a lecturer at Carleton University. The passion, enthusiasm, and commitment demonstrated by the Carleton community, coupled with the curiosity and eagerness of the students, fills me with immense hope and optimism. Together, we will embark on a transformative journey as we strive to create a world where Indigenous and settler relations are rooted in respect, equity, and justice. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this vital field of study, and I eagerly look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.
